Southern New England Landcare extends its congratulations to board members David Steller and Bryan Johnston, who were recognised at the Armidale Australia Day Awards for their outstanding contributions to the local community.
David Steller was named Senior Citizen/Elder of the Year, recognising his longstanding and selfless service to the Armidale community. David’s quiet but far-reaching contributions span environmental stewardship, social welfare, aged care and broader community service.
Through decades of consistent involvement, he has helped strengthen local connections, support vulnerable individuals and families, enhance green spaces, and uphold the dignity and wellbeing of older residents. His nomination reflects the humility, reliability and genuine commitment that have defined his contribution to community life.
Speaking to the Armidale Express, David acknowledged the collective effort behind community service, saying, “I think those people who have been nominated just do fantastic work in our community and I thank you very much for the
opportunity of representing them all.”
Bryan Johnston received the Environmental Citizen Award, recognising his long-standing leadership in environmental restoration across Armidale. Through his work with the Armidale Urban River Group and Southern New England Landcare, Bryan has played a central role in multi-decade efforts to rehabilitate the Dumaresq Creeklands, regenerate wetlands, improve community access to natural areas, and foster strong volunteer involvement in caring for the local environment.
Reflecting on the award, Bryan highlighted the value of community participation, saying, “We value our creekland and I’ve enjoyed every moment working down there with all the other volunteers — one final plug, Sunday the 8th we’ve got a working group!”
Southern New England Landcare is proud to have both David and Bryan on its board and congratulates them on this well-deserved recognition of their commitment to community and environmental stewardship.
