Nuffield Scholarship for Member Michael Taylor

nuffield MichaelTaylor 320On 12th September, Michael Taylor, landholder at Kentucky and member of Southern New England Landcare, was awarded one of 24 Nuffield Scholarships – a well-deserved Award to a hard-working knowledgeable local farmer.

Michael received his scholarship for drought resilience – to undertake research that will help develop and support new ideas to manage dry conditions for longer periods.

“Drought Resilience Scholars will be investigating innovative practices to help Australian farmers and communities withstand the impacts of drought,” explained Jodie Redcliffe, Nuffield Australia’s CEO.

Drought resilience has become a major focus of this year’s Nuffield program, with five new Scholarships run by the Federal Government’s Future Drought Fund.

Michael will study solutions to the challenges that hinder the widespread adoption of agroforestry.

Michael has built a reputation around his future-focused approach to farming and management of his Kentucky property running merino sheep and mixed angus cattle, while also operating a timber mill and farm stay accommodation, making him very diversified in the agricultural field.

Silvopasture 2021, an event focusing on agroforestry techniques and application, was founded by Michael, and supported by Southern New England Landcare.

The event proved very successful, drawing people from the local region, Victoria, ACT, Queensland and overseas.

Michael and the other recipients recently travelled to Perth to receive their Nuffield Scholarships for research topics ranging from drought resilience, climate change, drones, genetics, machine harvesting and agricultural policy.

Michael is diligent in any venture he tackles and is very keen to start his new project with the Nuffield Scholarship to help farmers far and wide with the impact of drought.

Southern New England Landcare congratulates Michael, knowing he is well prepared for his future achievement with the scholarship and will use the Nuffield Scholarship to make a real difference for his fellow farmers.
