Vale: Major General the Hon. Michael Jeffery

Gen. Michael JefferyLandcare Australia has honoured our much loved & admired Patron and Australia’s first National Soils Advocate, Major General the Hon. Michael Jeffery, who sadly passed away on Friday 18 December, 2020. Click here for press release

As soil advocate, he met with thousands of farmers, scientists, indigenous groups, policy makers, politicians, consultants, students & community groups. "I believe there are substantial benefits for all Australians from a more focused and integrated approach to the health of our soil.  A regenerated agricultural landscape will ensure the whole community will be healthier in terms of the food we eat, the air we breathe and the water we drink."

In October 2013, he was appointed as Australia’s National Advocate for Soil Health. In that role, Michael has been pivotal in alerting Australians to the generally poor quality of our soils. His vision – to encourage all Australians to focus on soil health and the urgent need to regenerate our urban and rural landscapes – underpins the work of Soils For Life.

Michael believes Australia can help teach farmers worldwide how to regenerate their landscapes, produce more nutritious food and create healthier communities. He is passionate and eloquent about the importance of regenerative landscape management to everyone who eats. You can access the archives of Michael Jeffery’s speeches from national and international events here.

In 2018, as Australia’s National Advocate for Soil Health, Major General Jeffery presented his paper, “Restore the Soil: Prosper the Nation“, to both the Prime Minister and the Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, the Hon. David Littleproud.

The Hon Penny Wensley AC was appointed as the National Soil Advocate from 28 August 2020.
