We will run 8 community events across the region for drought affected landholders and community members between June 2020 and June 2021.
The events will:
- Provide participants with ‘time out from the dry’ where they can come together for social networking, support and information
- Facilitate connectedness and help reduce stigma associated with mental health issues
- Host a relevant, topical guest presenters or activity providers
- Provide drought support and mental health and suicide prevention resources and contacts
- Provide an opportunity for local communities to cocreate their own more resilient futures through group action planning support from our Landcare Coordinator team.
These events will also aim to revitalise and strengthen existing Landcare groups experiencing a lull in their activities due to drought conditions preventing them from completing on ground works.
Community benefits
These morning tea events will bring socially isolated people together for increased connectedness around mental health support in the following local districts in our three local government areas: Glen Morrison, Lower Apsley, Kentucky/Wollun, Balala-Brushgrove, Wollomombi, Wongwibinda, Boorolong, Wandsworth.
Participants will have a better understanding of how to support their neighbours and friends, and where to source help if they encounter a problem. They will also benefit from new skills and knowledge on how to better take care of themselves physically and emotionally during the drought and bushfire season.
Local landcare groups in these areas may also experience a revival, providing ongoing support for individuals who participate in future group activities.
Events to support strategic objectives of Southern New England Landcare
These events support two key strategic objectives in the Southern New England Landcare Strategic Plan:
- Enable innovative regenerative initiatives for natural resources, agriculture and communities
- Build and service our networks in particular, through the following strategies:
- Support and strengthen Groups to harness the benefit of group processes in delivery
- Encourage more individuals to access our network and groups by making ourselves accessible through a variety of channels.
- Maintain current and foster new partnerships for the strategic delivery of initiatives
Partner organisations
We aim to partner with the Rural Financial Counsellor, RAMHP, PHN, and other mental health and suicide prevention organisations, as well as all three local government organisations in our region and Northern Tablelands Local Land Services. We see their support being through providing relevant guest speakers/presenters and resource materials at the events as an in kind contributions to the events.
