More ways to participate locally in our NTKP Project!

NTKP LOGOThe Northern Tablelands region has been identified as an important area for the future of koalas.

You can be involved in a variety of ways. We'd love to have you connect with us in the Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership Project!

It has several koala populations that are not subject to the same population and development pressures as those on the coast.

Climate modelling suggests that the region may also be more resilient to the impacts of a changing climate compared to other western NSW areas.

The Northern Tablelands Koala Partnership Project was established in 2020 with the primary purpose of helping protect and conserve local koala populations.

The project is hosted by Southern New England Landcare Ltd and was established under the new NSW Koala Strategy.

A new phase of the partnership will now extend until 2026 and build on the success of the 2020 project.

The continued collaboration recognises the important role of local and cultural knowledge in conserving local koala populations in the Northern Tablelands.

There are four key pillars that guide the objectives of the project, and they are all underpinned by community involvement.

    You can be involved in:

    1. Koala habitat conservation to protect, connect, revegetate and enhance Koala habitat on private and public lands
    2. Conservation through community action, to raise awareness about koalas and reduce threats to Koalas, which include habitat destruction, diseases like chlamydia, vehicle strike and dog attack.
    3. Health and safety of koalas, including development of a local koala rehabilitation centre to enable carers, vets and vet nurses to care for sick or injured koalas, and equipping and training emergency response rescue teams in the event of natural disasters.
    4. Building our knowledge through monitoring surveys in key koala habitat, using audio moths and koala detection dog teams.
