$60m to encourage Smart Farming Partnerships​

  • Part of the $134 million over six years for the Smart Farm grants through the next phase of the Coalition Government's $1 billion National Landcare Program.
  • Smart Farming Partnerships are multi-year grants of between $250,000 and $4 million for groups of organisations—applications open on 19 October and close 21 December 2017.

The Na​tional Landcare Program's new Smart Farming Partnerships is offering multi-year grants of between $250,000 and $4 million to put in place new and innovative sustainable land management practices, which protect and improve the condition of soils, vegetation and biodiversity. Grant details here.

$50m to help land managers farm smarter​

Farmers, fishers, community and industry groups can apply for grants of between $5,000 and $100,000 to assist them to protect and improve the condition of soil, vegetation and biodiversity and support agricultural systems to adapt to change. Grant details here.

NW LLS seeks sites for work on Bell’s Turtle recovery project

Work on the ‘Turtles Forever’ Bell’s Turtle recovery project is about to commence with ecologists ready to trek into the last remaining areas of Bell’s Turtle (Myuchelys bellii) habitat in NSW.

Specially trained sniffer dogs will also be used to detect turtle nests. Eggs will then be protected from foxes using exclusion cages on site or incubated off site so that hatchling turtles can later be released into the environment.

Slow fashion takes hold

Wanted: Letterbox drop volunteer in Armidale

Armidale Urban Rivercare Group has 100 bookmarks advertising our Working Bee on Sunday 12 November and they need to be letterbox dropped in the area off Erskine Street between Taylor Street and Cooks Road Armidale. Is anyone available to do a letterbox drop around this area in the coming days? Join us from 8.30 am on Sunday 12 November 2017, at Dumaresq Creek south of Phil Wheaton Soccer Field, access off Erskine street or along bike/walking track. BYO long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy boots. Please also bring gloves, broad brim hat and sunscreen. AURG will provide equipment, however additional wheelbarrows will be appreciated.

This workshop will be delivered by David Hardwick, an agroecologist with Soil Land Food. David’s unique presentation style guarantees you will learn a lot and have fun. David has worked with farmers all over Australia in grazing, cropping, sugar, cotton and dairy. This workshop is for farmers in New England interested in harnessing the benefits of soil organisms for increased productivity and sustainability.

Students speak for the planet in Armidale

Struan Ferguson did a great job representing SNE Landcare on the judging panel for the 'Speaking for the Planet' event held last week in Armidale. The theme for the day was 'Connection to Nature'. Struan said 'I was very impressed by the high quality of the presentations and the diversity of ideas the students had for connecting with nature. Schools from across the region attended the day - hosted by Phil Smith and Armidale Regional Council. Congratulations to our local State Landcare Award winners!

Last week saw the State Landcare Award champions announced at a celebration dinner in Albury. Southern New England Landcare would like to congratulate them all, especially the Northern Tablelands Local Land Services Aboriginal Reference Group, Bec Smith and the Armidale High School Black Creek Bushcare Group, and Gwydir Shire Council. The latter two were chosen to represent NSW at the National Awards next year. Well done! More information here.
