Victorian Network Pledges Support for Southern New England Farmers

DryTimeDinnerWEBDry Time Dinners will be the mechanism Southern New England Landcare employs to support local farmers using money pledged by the Northern Yarra Landcare Network in Victoria.

Southern New England Landcare was contacted last week by Mr John Birse, president of the Northern Yarra Landcare Network.

“At our recent AGM, we decided to assist drought-affected farmers in NSW by donating $1000 of our own funds,” said Mr Birse.

Serrated tussock320Serrated tussock is a weed of national significance. Highly adapted to a range of environments, it seeds prolifically and is difficult to control. The wind spreads large volumes of seed across long distances, allowing new populations to establish over large areas.

Jonathan Lawson, Regional Weeds Coordinator at Northern Tablelands Local Land Services, cautions against the threat and is keen to emphasise the serious risk it presents to the Northern Tablelands grazing system.

Managing Breeding Stock in Challenging Times

Cow calf feeding320Sourcing and providing good quality feed is challenging under the current conditions and it is particularly important that producers take additional care with late pregnant and lactating stock.

Northern Tablelands Local Land Services District Vet, Dr Lisa Martin at Tenterfield, is advising producers to monitor their heavily pregnant and lactating stock closely. The combination of poor quality alternative feeds this year such as Rhodes or Setaria grass hays, cane tops or sorghum stubbles with the continuing cold weather, increases the risk of metabolic disease in pregnant and lactating stock due to energy or calcium deficiencies.

Tackling Rural Crime Workshops

NSW Police Force Rural Crime Prevention Team will be attending 26 workshops across regional NSW between September to October from 6pm until 8pm for a rural crime get-together exclusively for farmers and primary producers.

Police will speak about the steps farmers can take to detect and prevent crime, new crime fighting technologies, how to report crime to police; and, what to do if a crime occurs.

These rural crime get-togethers are a great way for farmers to meet up with other farmers for some free food and relaxed chat with police.

Volunteer Grants 2018 open for application

The Australian Government is inviting applications via an open process to apply for funding to support volunteers under the Volunteer Grants Activity. Volunteer Grants aim to support the efforts of Australia’s volunteers by:

  • providing small amounts of money that organisations and community groups can use to help their volunteers
  • forming part of the Government’s work to support the volunteers who help disadvantaged Australian communities and encourage inclusion of vulnerable people in community life.
