Keeping rare raptors on the wing

Little Eagle David WhelanSmallNorthern Tablelands Local Land Services is offering a chance to see some of the region’s most impressive raptors, in the company of Australia’s foremost expert on these magnificent birds, Dr Steve Debus.

All are welcome to the “Nests in your neighbourhood” guided tour of eagle nest sites near Llangothlin, Malpas and Armidale on Wednesday 15 November.

The “Nests in your neighbourhood” event is part of a project looking at the breeding success of three local birds of prey; the White-bellied Sea Eagle, Little Eagle and Square-tailed Kite.

The three species are now listed as threatened in NSW, which means their numbers are in decline to the point of being at risk of extinction. The Birds Of Prey Monitoring project, which is a partnership between the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage, the New England North West Biodiversity Alliance, and Northern Tablelands Local Land Services, will provide baseline data for populations of these birds in hot spots across the region.

Northern Tablelands LLS Senior Land Services Officer Carina Johnson, said Steve Debus monitors signs of activity within and around the raptors’ stick nests, built in a large living tree, usually woodland eucalypts.

“So far, he has found 12 active Little Eagle nests near Armidale, and young in a nest of Sea Eagles at Llangothlin. He will continue to monitor nests in coming months to confirm whether breeding was successful this season,” Carina said.

“To date, the community assistance in locating nests has been fantastic, but we are particularly keen to locate more nests in and around Glen Innes and Tenterfield.”

Landholders and other members of the community who can help Local Land Services to identify the location of a nest for monitoring will each receive a free copy of ‘Birds of Prey of Australia - A Field Guide’, written by raptor expert, Dr Steve Debus.

For more information and bookings contact Carina Johnson on 02 6770 2017 or email carina.johnson@lls.nsw.gov.au. Participants should bring a hat, water bottle and binoculars. Please RSVP by 13 November.

This project is part of the $19.32 million of Catchment Action NSW investment that Local Land Services is delivering to enable better management of our water, soil, vegetation, biodiversity and cultural heritage.
